The Employee Assistant Program counselors are trained and experienced and all have attained Masters Degrees in Human Service fields along with licensure and/or certifications in appropriate areas of counseling. Get to know our counselors below.

Lisa Shelton - Employee Assistance Program - Appalachian Regional Healthcare SystemLisa Shelton has been employed with Appalachian Regional Healthcare System since 1985. Prior to her move to the Employee Assistance Program in 2000, Lisa was the Director of Medical Social Work at Watauga Medical Center. She is currently the Director of the EAP. Lisa grew up in Greensboro, NC where she graduated from Page High School. After graduating from UNC-Greensboro with a bachelor's degree in social work, Lisa moved to Boone with her husband Dan.

Lisa received her MSW from the Joint Master of Social Work Program from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in 1999. She was part of the first graduating class from the Joint Masters of Social Work Program. Lisa received her LCSW in 2003.

Lisa is married with two grown sons. She enjoys running and is part of a local running group for women. She also enjoys traveling, watching movies, reading, and spending time with her "Shelton men" which includes her Jack Russell Terrier, Tucker.

Lisa is proud of the work that the EAP has offered over the years and is proud to be a part of an organization that cares about the emotional well-being of its employees.


Kristen Harmon - Employee Assistance Program - Appalachian Regional Healthcare SystemKristin Harmon is a staff counselor for the EAP and has been employed with Appalachian Regional Healthcare System for a total of 15 years. She worked for 9 years as a social worker at Watauga Medical Center before moving to Florida and working with Hospice for 4 years. She returned to ARHS in 2008 and joined the Employee Assistance Program.

Kristin has lived in Watauga County most of her life. She graduated from Watauga High School then received her Bachelor of Social Work from Appalachian State University (ASU).

After 16 years out of school Kristin returned to ASU and completed her Master of Social Work in 2013. She is currently licensed as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate while completing her supervision hours required for licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.

Kristin is the coordinator for the High Country Crisis Team and a member of the NC Law Enforcement Assistance Program (NCLEAP).

Kristin is married and has 4 children, 2 grandchildren and 2 four-legged furry children. She enjoys spending time exploring the beauty of the area as well as photography, camping and hiking. She also likes to spend time with family and friends.

She is passionate about the people in the High Country and especially her fellow employees at ARHS.
