Appalachian Regional Healthcare System (ARHS) proudly introduced the formation of the Seby B. Jones Regional Cancer Center Navigation Team in 2013. The Team consists of four navigators, each offering their unique area of expertise on site in the Cancer Center, Monday through Friday. Their services are offered at no charge to each and every patient throughout the entire arduous ordeal of facing and fighting a cancer diagnosis.
Social Resource Navigator Angie Shoemake, MSW, provides patients with social and economic support and counsel; Counseling Navigator Melanie Childers, MA, LPC, provides patients with licensed professional counseling; Financial Navigator April Wilcox, provides cost of care estimations at the time of diagnosis and on-going financial navigation advice; and Nurse Navigator Paul Young, RN provides ongoing assessments and coordination for all aspects of clinical care.
Together, the Navigators work to identify and break down as many barriers to care as possible for each cancer patient at the SBJRCC. By removing as many of the nonmedical barriers as possible for the patient, the Cancer Center is providing not only treatment for the cancer itself, but also extensive care and support for the patients as they learn to navigate life as cancer survivors.
