The Seby B. Jones Regional Cancer Center offers FREE classes for cancer survivors currently undergoing treatment or post-treatment, as well as family and community members. We are thankful for our teachers who donate their time to serve! Each class is listed below. Pay close attention to the attendee qualifications when registering for classes. Seating is limited.

On-site support group

Facilitated by Cancer Center staff, this support group provides a safe and comfortable space for all patients and survivors to meet regularly and share honestly about their cancer experience with others who "know what it's like."

Yoga Class

Yoga classes will not meet 7/19, 7/26, or 8/2. Classes will resume August 9th at Boone Healing Arts at 5:30 p.m.

Day and Time: Wednesdays 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Attendee Qualifications: Cancer survivors in treatment or post-treatment, Seby B. Jones Regional Cancer Center staff

Location: Boone Healing Arts Center at 838 State Farm Rd in the yoga studio.

Description: 

Gentle yoga with Emily Yuratovac is intended to increase flexibility, focus, strength, and aid in relaxation. Beginners are welcome to this basic level class. Poses can be modified for comfort. Wear comfortable clothing. Please park in the Radiation Oncology or the Medical Oncology parking lots.

Steps to Survival Walking Group

Day and Time: Every Thursday, 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., through Oct 26th, weather Permitting

Attendee Qualifications: This group is for cancer patients, families, and friends, as well as staff of the Seby B. Jones Regional Cancer Center

Location: Clawson - Burnley Park (The Greenway Trail), 355 Hunting Hills Lane, Boone, NC. Meet at Pavilion on left upon arrival.

Description: 

Join patients & staff of the Cancer Center in a walking group intended to promote exercise and help increase energy levels. The group is open to anyone whether currently exercising or not. Come dressed comfortably to walk. Cancer patients who log 5 walks will receive a gift card. Those who log 10 walks will receive an additional gift card, and the grand prize is awarded after 15 consecutive walks.

Nutrition for Cancer Survivors

Day and Time: 3rd Thursday of every month at 2:00 p.m.

Attendee Qualifications: Post-treatment cancer survivors, family, and friends

Location: Seby B. Jones Regional Cancer Center, Break Room

Description: 

June 29: Nutrition and Breast Cancer (4th Thursday)

The focus of this class is for the breast cancer survivor who has completed treatment. This class addresses the current nutrition therapy recommendations and guidelines from the American Institute for Cancer Research to reduce the overall risk of recurrence and promote a more healthy diet.

July 20: Hot Topics in Nutrition

This class will discuss dieting myths and facts on many nutritional hot topics such as: the role of sugar on cancer cells, the use of artificial sweeteners, the role of soy in the diet, and plant based diets.

August 17: The Power of Food

This class will be a discussion on the power of food including; super foods, antioxidants, cancer fighting foods, dietary supplements, and plant based diets. We will learn about the link between nutrition, lifestyle, and cancer risk or recurrence.

September 21: Nutrition for Cancer Survivors 

This class will discuss the importance of nutrition for the patient upon completion of chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Discussions will enable the patient to take control of their diet while learning healthy ways to prevent recurrence of cancer or the risk of developing other cancers. Learn what a healthy portion size is. Why are antioxidants beneficial? Find out how much protein, carbohydrate and fat you need after treatment.

Lymphedema Prevention and Management

Description: 

This class will educate about lymphedema. Symptoms of lymphedema include swelling, redness, or heaviness of the extremities, most often after a surgery). Find out what lymphedema is, identify who is at risk, learn how to recognize it, how it is treated, and how to prevent it.

Radiance: Relax and Feel Radiant

Location: Seby B. Jones Regional Cancer Center, Break Room

Description: Cancer treatments aren't always prescribed by doctors. Learn about skin therapy, receive makeup and wig tips, and make your own turban. Let licensed estheticians and cosmetologists help you address the cosmetic side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Most makeup products will be available, however participants are encouraged to bring their own, especially if you have allergies or reactions to cosmetics. Bring an old t-shirt and we will show you how to make your own turban.

Description: 

Meditation can promote relaxation, ease stress, and help nurture the mind and body. Our meditation practice will include basic techniques on breath awareness, focusing, and being calm. The sessions are free and open to cancer patients, their family, or cancer center staff regardless of whether you have previously meditated. The class is facilitated by Todd Bush, a certified meditation teacher.
