Kris Hartley, ACSM-CES, CSCS

Kris Hartley, ACSM-CES, CSCS is the Fitness Supervisor and a certified clinical exercise specialist and certified strength and conditioning specialist with a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Appalachian State University. His fitness experience includes working for the Wellness Center for six years and being the North Carolina State Director for the National Strength and Conditioning Association from August 2010-April 2013.

His personal interest includes football, baseball, being outdoors and lifting weights. Kris enjoys working with and creating individual and group programs for clients of all ages. He specializes in disease management, weight loss while promoting increased mobility, functional strength, and muscular and cardiovascular endurance.

Greg Cox, MS, CSCS, CF-L1

Greg Cox, MS, CSCS, CF-L1 is the Head Fitness Instructor and a certified strength and conditioning specialist and CrossFit Level 1 coach. He has a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from East Carolina University and a master’s degree in Exercise Science from Appalachian State University. He also holds certifications in Olympic weightlifting, mobility and Spin. He has worked as a fitness professional in a variety of settings for over 15 years, including 12 years at The Wellness Center.

In his free time Greg enjoys weight lifting, running, biking and CrossFit. Greg enjoys working with individuals one-on-one and coaching CrossFit classes. He specializes in strength and conditioning, fat loss and cardiovascular conditioning.

Michael Darling, CSCS, NSCA-CPT

Michael Darling, CSCS, NSCA-CPT has 14 years of experience working in the fitness industry. Currently, he is serving as a Fitness Instructor at Appalachian Regional Healthcare System’s Wellness Center in Boone, NC. There, he enjoys instructing a diverse population in reaching their fitness goals. His qualifications include a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science with a concentration in Strength and Conditioning from Appalachian State University, as well as being certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and NSCA Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT).

He also supervises student teachers as they educate college students in a weight training practicum course at Appalachian State University. He is presently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Health Studies through the University of Alabama.


Katie Greene

Katie Greene, CSCS has been a personal trainer at the Wellness Center since 2010 after she graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Health Promotion and Exercise Science. She is CSCS certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and will graduate with a Master’s in Health Studies from the University of Alabama in 2014. Along with working as personal trainer, she is also the administrative coordinator of THRIVE, a clinical program designed for individuals with cardiopulmonary disease.

“When it comes to personal training, I believe that every client has different needs and goals and as a trainer it is my job to help find the right balance of strength training, aerobic training, and nutrition to maximize results. There is no magic pill or magic wand – it takes hard work and a lifetime of dedication. My own workouts consist of heavy lifting and interval training.” She also loves hiking with her two dogs, Tater and Goose!


Martin Hubner MS, CSCS, HFS, USAW-L1

Martin Hubner MS, CSCS, HFS, USAW-L1 is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) specializing in adolescent and adult strength training. He is a 2009 graduate (BA) from the University of North Carolina Wilmington with a degree in Physical Education and Health, and a 2011 graduate (MS) from Appalachian State University with a degree in Exercise Science. His experience includes military, specifically Marines, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) athletes, NCAA D1 soccer players and swimmers, and middle/high school football, basketball, baseball, and golf.

Prior to his college education, Martin served active duty in the US Marine Corps and served as the Physical Training (PT) instructor for his platoon of approximately 60 Marines. Currently he holds certifications from the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA), the American College of Sports Medicine (Health Fitness Specialist), and USA Weightlifting (USAW L-1). He has developed the Youth Strength & Conditioning Program at the Wellness Center and serves as its primary coach where he teaches various strength training techniques and programs for 12-17 year olds.


Tiffany Norman, ACSM-CPT

Tiffany Norman, ACSM-CPT is a graduate of Greensboro College with a BS in Sports and Exercise Studies with a concentration in Exercise Science. While in college Tiffany was a NCAA Divison III volleyball player. She is a American College of Sports Medicine certified personal trainer and spin instructor. She also works as the THRIVE Oncology Coordinator and exercise physiologist in the THRIVE cardiopulmonary program. Tiffany enjoys working with a wide variety of people. Mainly special populations; cancer patients, cardiac patients and older individuals.

Her fitness philosophy involves helping people improve their lives by educating and promoting a healthy lifestyle through day to day activities.


Amber Troutman

Amber Troutman, ACSM-HFS joined the Wellness Center’s fitness team in the summer of 2012. She graduated from Appalachian State University in the spring 2011 with a BS in Exercise Science with a concentration in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and a minor in Health Promotions. After graduation, she devoted a year to campus ministry mentoring college age girls at the University of West Georgia while also pursuing further certifications in her field. As a part of the team here at the Wellness Center, Amber has her ACSM Health and Fitness Specialist certification. She enjoys challenging people to pursue their health and wellness goals in an approach to see it affect their overall physical, social, and emotional health. She works mostly with special population and weight loss clients.

Along with personal training, Amber teaches an arthritis class in the therapy pool, helps run our Healthy Hearts program, and is a member of the THRIVE Cardiac and Oncology team. Outside of the Wellness Center, Amber enjoys spending time with family, friends, and her dogs. She likes being outdoors hiking, gardening, camping, and running. And when the weather won’t allow, she enjoys cooking, reading, and going out for a big breakfast.


Jacob Lineberger

Jacob Lineberger is a recent graduate of Appalachian State University, with a major in Health Promotion and minor in Health Care management. He has plans to obtain his ACSM certification as well as his CrossFit level 1 certification, in addition to a graduate school degree. His personal interests include playing and watching sports of all kinds, CrossFit, and spending time with family and friends. Jacob likes to work with all ages and help them see personal growth in their health and fitness.

He believes in creating workout programs with functional movements that can transfer into everyday activities.


Chas Deal

Charles "Chas" Deal, ACSM-CPT is a Certified Personal Trainer through the American College of Sports Medicine and a recent graduate of Appalachian State University with a degree in Exercise Science. Chas is a former intern at the Wellness Center, and he began personal training in 2013. He has worked with clients of all ages and fitness levels.

His personal interests include basketball, soccer, CrossFit and many outdoor sports. He specializes in weight loss, toning and fuctional strength and conditioning.


Joe Veler

Joe Veler began CrossFit in its opening week at the Wellness Center. After six months and many physical and mental improvements to his life, he decided to share those improvements with others and received his CrossFit Level 1 Certification in August of 2012. In September of 2012, he began coaching at the Wellness Center, focusing on fitness as a conduit to strength and camaraderie.

In addition to participation in regional CrossFit competitions, Joe enjoys his fitness through hiking, trail running, climbing, biking, and outdoor adventuring. His active lifestyle is a reflection of his own perception of fitness: that it has little to do with what you weigh or how you look, and instead comes from how you feel and what you can do.
