Treatments may include:

  • Diagnostic local anesthestic blocks - identify the exact source of pain
  • Therapeutic nerve blocks - local anesthetic and/or steroid injections given near a nerve or group of nerves to relieve pain
  • Radiofrequency - deactivates a nerve that transmits pain for prolonged pain relief
  • Trigger point injections
  • Joint and bursa injections
  • Medication management - rational use may include anti-inflammatories, opioid and nonopioid analgesics, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, muscle relaxants, etc.
  • Physical and occupational therapy
  • Dietary and nutritional counseling
  • Psychological counseling using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or biofeedback training
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
  • Spinal cord stimulation - an implantable device that stimulates the spinal cord to treat pain
  • Spinal drug delivery systems - an implantable computerized pump that delivers opioids, local anesthetics, baclofen and other medications continuously into the spine to control intractable pain or spasticity.
