Braffman Going for Purple

Wayne Braffman, PhD

According to a recent article in The Avery Journal-Times, “Dr. Wayne Braffman is on a crusade to raise money for cancer research.” For those who don’t know, Braffman is a Psychologist who works in our Behavioral Health department at Cannon Memorial Hospital. In September of last year, Braffman lost his wife, Bertie, to cancer.

According to the article, Braffman says “it’s been an unexpected experience” for him personally. “At first I thought I would dedicate… my fundraising effort to Bertie alone, but then I began thinking of the others in my life – high school classmates, relatives, friends – who have also been taken by cancer in its many forms.”

Since being asked by a co-worker if he would like to participate in the Avery County Relay for Life, Braffman has reached the diamond level and raised more than $8,500 for the cause. The American Cancer Society recognizes 10 levels of individual fundraising achievement – Level 9 is Diamond, $7,500 and Level 10 is Purple, $10,000.

The Avery County Relay for Life will take place on Friday, August 5 from 6 pm to 12 am at Avery High School. The Survivor’s Walk starts at 6 pm and the luminaria service starts at 9 pm.
