Appalachian Healthcare Project - Appalachian Regional Healthcare System

Appalachian Healthcare Project is a collaborative effort among the medical community to provide healthcare for low income, uninsured residents of Watauga and Avery Counties.

The project enrolls persons who meet program guidelines and coordinates health care on the individual's behalf. Coordination of health care includes: managing referrals to specialists, helping patients get access to medications, and patient case management. Medical providers donate much needed care to individuals who qualify.

Program Guidelines

Appalachian Healthcare Project strives to help individuals who meet the following program guidelines:

  1. Have a total gross household income at or below 100% federal poverty guidelines
  2. Be a resident of Watauga or Avery County for the past 60 days
  3. Have NO access to health insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, Worker’s Comp ,VA Benefits, No coverage through the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), third party payments or be covered under financial assistance through the hospital system
  4. You must have a chronic, on-going medical problem
  5. You must have a participating primary care physician within Avery or Watauga County 

If you do not meet all of the above five requirements, there still may be some programs that can help you to pay for doctor’s visits and medicines. Contact the Department of Social Services about federal programs (Medicaid, Medicare) or drug company programs to help pay for medicines.

The project is a cooperation of doctors in Watauga and Avery County, Watauga Medical Center, Cannon Hospital, area pharmacies, DayMark Recovery Services, Watauga and Avery County Health departments, along with other allied health providers. What to bring with you when signing up for the Appalachian Healthcare Project

  • Most current tax return from you and anyone else in your household that filed taxes
  • All bottles or other packaging for medicines which you are currently prescribed
  • A current North Carolina driver’s license or photo identification showing your current address
  • The most recent three months pay stubs or other valid pay verification from you and/or anyone else in your household working or receiving income from another source. Other sources include, but are not limited to:
    • SSI, Disability, Social Security, pensions, VA Benefits, Worker’s Comp, Unemployment, etc. If you work for cash, you must have a letter from person you work/have worked for stating amount earned and the hours worked with rate of pay 
  • The most recent three months bank statements (if any) from you and anyone else in your household including but not limited to: checking, savings, CDs, Money Market, IRA, etc
  • If you have filed for Medicaid and been denied, a copy of the denial letter is required
  • If you are receiving Food Stamp assistance, a letter stating the amount your household receives and the dates you are approved is required
  • If you are receiving HUD housing assistance or any other type of housing assistance, a letter or copy of the rental agreement stating how much assistance is received each month is required
  • If you are receiving alimony or child support, we need documentation of the amount received
  • If you are living with family and/or friends at little or no cost to you, please bring a letter stating when you started staying there and what you are responsible for paying
  • Please bring in all your bills for your monthly household expenses including: Rent or Mortgage payments, auto payments, auto and/or house insurance, telephone, cell phone, cable or satellite dish, electric, water/sewer, credit cards, food/groceries, gas for vehicles, etc
  • Denial letter from Health Insurance Marketplace stating you are NOT eligible for subsidies to assist with cost of health insurance through the Affordable Care Act
