Avery County Cancer Resource Center
The Avery County Cancer Resource Center opened March 5, 2007. Initially located in the dressing area of the radiology department at Cannon Memorial Hospital, the Center relocated in July 2009 into an office suite in the Sloop Medical Office Plaza on the Cannon Memorial Hospital campus. The Center includes a wig bank, donated by the American Cancer Society, as well as turbans and hats purchased by the Cannon Memorial Hospital Volunteer program. Local volunteers also knit caps for chemo patients.
The Center, co-sponsored by the Cannon Memorial Hospital Volunteer Program, the American Cancer Society and the Avery County Health Department, is open 5 days a week and completely staffed by volunteers.
The resource center's volunteer coordinator works closely with the Seby B. Jones Cancer Center and the Tri-Cities Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure. The coordinator also regularly attends Cancer Resource Alliance meetings, which consists of community members from Ashe, Avery and Watauga counties.
The Avery County Cancer Resource Center gives patients access to:
- Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program
- General Cancer Screenings
- Reach to Recovery
- Road to Recovery
- Look Good Feel Better
- Lymphedema Treatments
- Support Groups
The Appalachian Regional Healthcare Foundation works with the Resource Center to secure funds for screening or diagnostic mammograms for uninsured or underinsured women in the area.
The Avery County Cancer Resource Center is the result of work by the Rural Health Initiative. Developed by the American Cancer Society, the Rural Health Initiative discusses rural health concerns with rural communities to identify opportunities to provide information and services for patients diagnosed with cancer.
