Appalachian State University Athletics announced the formation of a new, exclusive sports medicine agreement with the Boone-based Appalachian Regional Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center (AppOrtho).

As a part of the agreement, AppOrtho will provide general medical and orthopaedic care for all App State student-athletes.

AppOrtho will ensure sports medicine coverage for all App State football games (home and away) and be on the sidelines for all home App State basketball games, wrestling matches and conference championship events. It will also be on-call for all other home App State athletics events.

"We are excited to continue our partnership with AppOrtho," App State director of athletics Doug Gillin said. "Student-athlete welfare is vitally important to our mission. We have a responsibility to ensure that our student-athletes have the best medical care readily available to them.

"AppOrtho has provided excellent orthopaedic care for student-athletes over the past four years. However, this new agreement takes that care to an even higher level."

AppOrtho is a subsidiary company owned by Appalachian Regional Healthcare System (ARHS).

"We are extremely pleased to be able to provide general medical, orthopaedic and sports medicine care for App State student-athletes," ARHS President and CEO Chuck Mantooth said. "Our multi-disciplinary team of providers at AppOrtho, consisting of orthopaedic surgeons, family medicine specialists, physician's assistants and trainers, will work collaboratively with App State to develop performance enhancement methodologies, injury prevention protocols and specialized treatment plans that are tailored to each student-athlete's needs."

"We really want to ensure that Mountaineer athletes and fans of all ages know they can trust AppOrtho and Appalachian Regional Healthcare System as their local healthcare provider."
